FAMILY TREEHOUSES:
Single Bedroom Family Tree houses.... The ancient Knysna forests surround
this arboreal retreat in the mountains.
THE EYRIE
Ideal for a family of four, this unit stretches through the canopy exposing
a high view of the forested Karatara gorge far below.
The huge Safari tent includes Queen sized bed, double bunk and en suite
bathroom. The fully equipped kitchen, dining and lounge areas are sheltered
under verandahs.
The site was selected after extensive exploration. Small exploratory
paths were cut to extend the natural animal trails through the dense,
virgin forest. After a particularly thorny struggle we came across the
carcass of a fallen invader Rooikrans. Light streamed through the rip
in the canopy far above, lifting the gloom from the forest floor. By
climbing along the fallen tree and standing on tiptoes, the amazing
view of the valley below was revealed....
The 50m path winds through the forest carefully avoiding damage to the
indigenous trees while keeping the grades low enough for wheelchair
access. The edges of the path are shored up with Karri planks against
pegs on the downhill side. The boardwalk onto the unit provided a safe
base for construction activities.
Two men carefully planted the main poles underpinning the tree house
into the ground, avoiding root damage. The substructure held the scaffolding
to build the deck, without damage to the sensitive forest floor.
The back of the unit is 1m off the ground, while the front is above
the tree line, towering 8m off the steeply plunging slope below.

TRANQUILITY
Tranquility is our final tree house. Completed the 16th December 2005,
it is a family unit and incorporates much of what we have learnt in
the construction of the other tree houses. Well, so we thought. Each
treehouse has been changed
and upgraded. So nothing is static.
We changed the bathroom to incorporate a shower. Made an enclosed glassed
and carpeted lounge so its great for all seasons and added yet more
deck to access a better view. It is a spacious treehouse surrounded
by indigenous forest. The deck has covered and open areas and the forest
entrance is lit with pretty fairy lights.
We even lightened the bedroom by building a glass window into the
canvas walls.
